I am a professional club builder and fitter. This blog will be all things about proper fitting and club building. I have worked at HotStix in Arizona and presently I am the lead builder and one of the fitters at a well known high end custom club manufacturer.

re: Fit to be easy:

Hi John,

Yes an older set of clubs can be fitted. But there are some problems that you can run into that will end up giving you less than what you think your getting. Most if not all of the major 4 makers of irons produce iron heads that have what we call a taper tip shaft insertion into the hosel of the head. A custom fit set of clubs will have the frequency of each iron at a certain spot on what we call a frequency slope. To achieve this a custom builder will frequency analyze each shaft and head combination in the set. Cutting each shaft to match the recommended frequency slope for that persons set. We each have a certain frequency which is our natural swing mechanics that it works the best at. The point of frequency sloping the clubs is so each club can be swung the same as the other clubs in the set. They feel the same in stiffness and swing weight so your swing doesn't have to change to match each club in your set. You just feel more like you have your favorite club in your hand with every club. Right now your favorite club, well let me refraise that, the club in your bag right now that you hit the most consistantly with. Is probably the one glub in your set that comes close to fitting you. Basically you use you natural swing all the time instead of having to adjust your swing to work write with each of your clubs. Taper tip shafts don't let you cut to frequency. So your set very rare comes close to matching off the shelf. You can have them bored out to be able to handle a parralel tip but that will void your warranty from the manufacturer. If you have bore through irons like Ping or Callaway, then will be even more difficult to get your heads to weigh the right amount in relationship to each other. In a normal set of club each club swing weights the same, but the actual pre-assembled heads should be seven grams in between iron heads and then 4- 5 grams between wedges. A 3 iron head weighs less than the 4 iron and so forth down the line. So bore through irons are way harder to adjust head weights to get the set as close to perfect as you can.

I could go into more detail but I hope you get the picture if not ask me another one! I will answer it if I know it. if I not ,I probably know some one who does!

Now so far as cost is concerned. It varies depending I where you go to have it done. I have seen any where from $40 to $300 to be fitted. Where I am now we charge $150 for the fitting and if you buy something a good percentage of that is applied to your purchase. We have sets that range from $300 - $1300. Just depends on how well made a club you want. You see once you are properly fitted you should be able to play that set of clubs for a long long time and stop going through the cycle of buying the latest greatest club of the month. Let's face it, drivers can only be so hot and they get hoter with age. yeup! The face gets thinner and hotter as it gets older.

I hope that at least begins to answer your questions!

Thanks for puttin on over here to ask!

I have two questions for you. 1) Lets say I have an existing set of irons that I am happy with. Can I have these older clubs fitted out even though I've been playing them out of the box for years? Is it necessary to start with a new set of clubs?

2)How much does it cost to have clus customized?
